Konvicted

Konvicted Review

Konvicted Feature

  • AKON KONVICTED
If R&B has been drifting lately, Konvicted proves Akon's ready to take the wheel: His reedy voice encapsulates Jersey, Jamaica, and continents beyond (Africa, most notably); his wait-a-beat delivery enhances his high-flying hooks; and his attitude mulches thuggery and womanizing into something worth spreading around. If that's not indication enough he's on a roll, consider the accolades Konvicted is racking up--a Grammy nod for "Smack That" (featuring Eminem), a No. 1 single with "I Wanna Love You" (featuring Snoop Dogg), sales in the millions. To count Akon a musical groundbreaker, though, you have to be ready to embrace a new genre that might take Brian McKnight and Usher fans a little getting used to: hardcore R&B. Both "I Wanna Love You" and "Smack That" don't shy away from raunch, and tracks like "Tired of Runnin'" and "Shake Down" bring on an MC edge that belongs more to the street than to the bedroom. Still, count on Akon to convince holdouts he's worth hearing; both his message and his manner bear the marks of the unstoppable. --Tammy La Gorce AKON KONVICTED

Curtain Call - The Hits [2CD deluxe edition]

Curtain Call - The Hits [2CD deluxe edition] Review

The Stan's Mixtape bonus CD on this two-disc deluxe edition finds the main character in "Stan" bringing together his favorite Eminem songs. Among the seven tracks are two from The Slim Shady LP: the #5 Rap "Just Don't Give a F***" and the Dr. Dre & Mel Man-produced "Role Model." From The Marshall Mathers LP are "Criminal" and the Dr. Dre & Mel Man-produced "Kill You." The mixtape also includes two tracks previously unavailable on any Eminem album--the "Dead Wrong RMX" (featuring the Notorious B.I.G.), notably co-produced by P. Diddy; and "Renegade" (featuring Jay-Z), a legendary duet from Jay-Z's classic The Blueprint album. Also included on the bonus CD is "Sh*t on You" (featuring D12), which until now has never been released on CD.

The first disc of Curtain Call includes three new songs--"Fack," "Shake That" (featuring Nate Dogg) and "When I'm Gone"--both written and produced by Eminem. In addition, the Curtain Call bonus track marks the album premiere of the controversial Eminem-Elton John live duet of "Stan" from the 2001 Grammy Awards presentation.

Executive produced by the nine-time Grammy winner, Curtain Call boasts all five of Eminem's gold and platinum singles to date, from the platinum, Oscar, and two-time Grammy-winning "Lose Yourself" (#1 Pop/#2 Rap) from the 8 Mile soundtrack and platinum "Just Lose It" (#6 Pop/#7 Rap) and "Mockingbird" (#11 Pop/#10 Rap) to the gold "Without Me" (#2 Pop/#5 Rap) and "Like Toy Soldiers" (Top 40 Pop). The other Grammy winners included are "My Name Is" (Top 40 Pop/#10 Rap) and "The Real Slim Shady" (#4 Pop/#7 Rap). Also heard are "The Way I Am" (Top 30 Rap), "Stan" (featuring Dido) (Top 40 R&B/Hip-Hop), "Sing for the Moment" (Top 20 Pop/Rap), "Guilty Conscience" (featuring Dr. Dre), and "Cleanin' Out My Closet" (#4 Pop/#5 Rap).

Curtain Call: The Hits spans contributions from all four of Eminem's major-label solo albums: 1999's quadruple-platinum The Slim Shady LP, 2000's nine-times-platinum The Marshall Mathers LP, 2002's eight-times-platinum The Eminem Show, and 2004's Encore, which is almost five times platinum. The three most recent charted #1 Pop and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop, with his major-label debut #2 Pop and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop. Each of his first three albums also won the Best Rap Album Grammy (Encore will be eligible for the 2006 presentation). Eminem has to date sold more than 65 million albums.

D12 World

D12 World Review

D12 World Feature

  • D 12 WORLD
You can say this about D12: few rap groups do a better job of straddling the line between the humorous and offensive, silly and sadistic. So when Eminem kick starts D12's sophomore effort by spewing vulgar rhymes to the tune of the adolescent "Name Game" on "Git Up," it's not entirely unexpected. But can D12 ever be considered anything other than an Eminem science project gone awry? "My Band," a pure novelty track (and this album's "Purple Pills"), addresses this question. Rather than lament the fact that nobody cares about the rest of the Em's crew, group members Proof, Kuniva, Swift, and Bizarre celebrate their obscurity while Shady himself croons a painfully catchy off-kilter hook. In fact, most of the crew's punch lines and hooks tend to be overshadowed by Him. Plus, Eminem produces a sizable chunk of the tracks, which is not necessarily a good thing considering his rhyme skills trump his beat-making skills considerably. With the exception of Mr. Proof's banging production on "Good Die Young" and Bizarre's creepy shock rap come-ons on "U R the One," D12's world sounds too much like an Eminem side project. Beat contributions by Kanye West (title cut) and Dr. Dre ("American Psycho 2") bolster the overall product, but not to the level of an Eminem solo album. --Dalton Higgins 2004 album from Eminem's Detroit based hip hop crew D12. UK edition includes the single 'My Band' & two bonus tracks, 'Barbershop' & 'Slow Your Roll'. Shady/Interscope.

Eminem Presents: The Re-Up

Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Review

Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Feature

  • EMINEM EMINEM PRESENTS THE RE-UP
What began life as an informal street mix-tape project to help launch fledgling Shady Records artists (Stat Quo, Ca$his, Bobby Creekwater, Obie Trice, and producer The Alchemist) has now become an official release. Flowing fairly randomly from track to track, the project, perhaps surprisingly for such a high profile outing, retains its original mixtape vibe. It's a thuggish and sluggish affair, led by Alchemist's somber, strong-arm beats (with additional production from Dr. Dre amd Kon Artis), and inhabited by a varied range of voices, from the Shady Records artists previously mentioned to Eminem himself (on half a dozen tracks), and appearances from 50 Cent, the recently slain Proof, and others from the G Unit crew. With so many cuts at the same tempo and with the same moody aura, it can all start to wear a little in places. Indeed, with such a wealth of up and coming talent and established personnel at work, there really ought to be more stand-outs. As it is, we get perhaps six killers (including Eminem-led cuts, "The Re-Up" and "Jimmy Crack Corn"), a disproportionate amount of fillers, and a mixtape/album that--just about--leaves a vaguely positive impression. --Paul Sullivan Eminem Presents: The Re-Up (Shady Records/Interscope Records), began as a street mixtape project--an underground, unofficial CD with raw production values--designed to help launch new Shady Records artists Stat Quo, Ca$his and Bobby Creekwater. "But what happened is that the material was so good and the tracks were getting produced like a regular album," said Eminem. "Instead of putting it out there rough and unfinished, I thought we should add some other new tracks, make it a real album, and put it in the record stores to give these new artists a real boost." The album was executive produced by Eminem, who also produced the majority of the songs. A handful of selections were produced by The Alchemist, who also compiled the album in true mixtape fashion. The Alchemist is best known for his work with Cypress Hill, Nas, Snoop Dogg, Mobb Deep, and Jadakiss.

Each of the tracks makes its official CD debut on Eminem Presents: The Re-Up, though Stat Quo's "Billion Bucks," and Obie Trice's "Cry Now" (Remix), produced by LT Moe, was recently released on mixtapes and to radio. The first single and video will be "You Don't Know" from Eminem, 50 Cent, Ca$his and Lloyd Banks. With Eminem and Ca$his from the Shady camp and 50 Cent and Lloyd Banks from G-Unit, the rap illustrates the unity of the two organizations.

The Re-Up also gave acclaimed hip-hop producer The Alchemist a chance to work with Shady's new regime. After joining forces on-stage as Eminem's DJ on last year's Anger Management 3 tour, Alchemist and the Shady camp began collaborating in the studio. This new album features the results of this anticipated collaboration with new tracks produced by The Alchemist featuring Stat Quo, Ca$his, Bobby Creekwater and Obie Trice.

Among the album's other recordings are "No Apologies" from Eminem; "Talkin' All That" from Ca$his; "City Of Gold" from Bobby Creekwater; "Murder" from Bizarre and Kuniva (both of D12); and The "Smack That (Remix)" with Akon.

Stat Quo, hailing from Atlanta, was signed to a joint deal between Shady Records and Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment after Eminem and Dre heard him on the Underground Atlanta mixtape series. Creekwater, also from Atlanta, was inked after Eminem heard his work on demos and in the studio with The Alchemist. Ca$his, a Chicago native transplanted in his youth to Orange Co., California, was a member of West Coast underground favorites The Renegadez.

Rampant misinformation about Eminem Presents: The Re-Up included many false internet tracklistings and that the mixtape would be a tribute to D12's Proof, the recently slain rapper and close friend of Eminem. "The D12 album and those unreleased songs with Proof are coming," said Eminem. "But The Re-Up is about these new artists and these new songs. It isn't fair to them or to the memory of Proof to mix them up."

The Slim Shady LP

The Slim Shady LP Review

The Slim Shady LP Feature

  • EMINEM THE SLIM SHADY LP
On The Slim Shady LP, Eminem wants it all. He's conflicted, you see; the world has treated him badly, and he wants to respond in kind. But he isn't a straight-up gangsta--this is, after all, the first release on Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, his post-Death Row-era venture--and Eminem (born Marshall Mathers) doesn't really want anyone to follow in his footsteps, which leads to some interesting contradictions on this album. In the first single, "My Name Is," he's self-deprecating, rapping about his poor upbringing and his hairy palms. But on the very next song, "Guilty Conscience," he plays the devil to Dr. Dre's angel--that is, until Eminem brings up an incident from Dre's devilish past, rapping, "You gonna take advice from someone who slapped Dee Barnes?" Later, on "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," he turns Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" on its ear, making it a tale of murder; but on "My Fault," he actually feels bad--though whether it's for the girl he overdosed or for himself is tough to figure out. With his nasal Midwestern tone, Mathers has a clean, clear flow, and the production--by Dr. Dre, Marky, and Jeff Bass--is crisp but consistently fun. With his outlook, it's tough to take Eminem too seriously, but he's made an album you don't have to take seriously to enjoy. --Randy Silver Asian exclusive special edition reissue of 1999 album includes a bonus enhanced disc with eight tracks, 'Hazardous Youth' (Acapella Version), Sway & King Tech feat. Curtis

Curtis Review

Curtis Feature

  • 50 CENT CURTIS
If you believe everything you hear, Curtis is 50 Cent's bid to be hip-hop king--the rumor goes that he issued it the same day Kanye West released his Graduation CD to spawn a sales race and thus, a) establish superiority, or b) retire with his head hung low. But here's what might not have occurred to 50: Given enough talent and a fully loaded speed-dial--the kind that can raise Timbaland, Akon, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Eminem faster than the sickest rapper can stitch together a verse--it's possible for two diabolically good discs to drop the same day. Forgetting the Kanye competition for a moment, Curtis might come up short in a race with its creator's other albums--the rawness and reach of Get Rich Or Die Tryin' isn't here. But certain cultural moments (who would refute that the release Get Rich… was one?) can't be replicated, and what Curtis lacks in credible grit, it more than makes up for in finesse. Never let it be said that you can't be fierce and flow at the same time: "I Get Money" glides back to the old school in sound--there's a house party happening behind this track--but sends out a modern message, "I'll Still Kill," with Akon, underscores 50's continued thug-hood with a lethal hook, and "Follow My Lead," with the smoothie Robin Thicke, is a finger-popper worth 100 plays for its sly mood alone. May the best rapper, if there is one, keep rapping. --Tammy La Gorce THIS CD INCLUDES A FREE RINGTONE AND MOBILE PHONE WALLPAPER (please see insert for details) The Superstar Rappers Third Album Includes Production from Dr. Dre, Eminem and Timbaland, and more.

CURTIS (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope), features guest appearances by Eminem, Timbaland, Akon, Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke, and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls.

50 has 2 HOT tracks leading up to the release of Curtis! Both have taken the radio airwaves by storm: "AYO TECHNOLOGY" featuring JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and TIMBALAND - produced by TIMBALAND, and "I GET MONEY!" Curtis continues 50 Cent's phenomenal rise from the mean streets. His official debut album, 2003's Get Rich Or Die Tryin.., sold 872,000 units in the first four days of its release, making it the fastest-selling debut disc in the SoundScan era (since 1991). The album was the biggest seller of 2003 and is currently ten times platinum worldwide. Later that year, The New Breed, a DVD with a bonus CD including new songs, charted #2 Pop and #1 R&B/Hip-Hop. His second album, 2005's The Massacre, was the second biggest-selling album of the year and is now seven times platinum worldwide. Since he first dropped his bombs on the music world, 50 has earned 11 Grammy nominations, from Best New Artist to Best Rap Album for each of his first two efforts. Attesting to his worldwide popularity, Get Rich Or Die Tryin' hit #2 in the U.K. and #1 in Australia while The Massacre went #1 in both those countries, #2 in Sweden, and is the biggest-selling rap album in India, where it has been certified double platinum, selling more than 2,000,000 copies. Back in the U.S., 50 has scored three singles claiming the #1 spot across the charts -- R&B/Hip-hop, Rap, and Pop: "In Da Club," "Candy Shop," and "21 Questions" (featuring Nate Dogg). Three more went Top 3 across the board: "P.I.M.P," "Just A Lil Bit," and "Disco Inferno." Yet another four were Rap Top 10s: "Wanksta," "Outta Control (Remix)," "Window Shopper," and "Best Friend." Four of the above have been certified digital gold: "In Da Club," "Candy Shop," "P.I.M.P," and "Disco Inferno." From music to movies, video games to books, a clothing line to footwear, 50 has taken street culture by storm. But as Curtis proves, and as he says in ..Straight to the Bank,.. 50 Cent wants even more.

8 Mile: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture

8 Mile: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture Review

How Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming out party is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle," Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer, DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho hum) on "You Wanna Be Me." Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of underground wordsmiths, such as 50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. --Dalton Higgins

The Eminem Show

The Eminem Show Review

The Eminem Show Feature

  • EMINEM THE EMINEM SHOW
Any lingering doubts as to the depth of Eminem's skills or his potential for raw yet compelling honesty are dispelled on The Eminem Show's first track. Armed with a quicksilver flow and a thundering rhythm track (the record was exec produced by longtime mentor and partner Dr. Dre), "White America" finds Eminem ferociously mauling the hand that feeds him, lambasting his critics, the industry, and the racism that, in many ways, helped make Marshall Mathers more than just another rapper. "Let's do the math," Em sneers, "If I was black I would have sold half/ I could be one of your kids/ Little Eric looks just like this." After the bombast of The Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem's well-noted use of sexual epithets, this kind of material is made more controversial because it actually rings true. From a brutal retort to his long-estranged and equally troubled mother ("Cleaning Out My Closets") to a surprisingly tender ode to his child ("Hailie's Song"), Eminem examines his life, loves, arrests, addictions, failures, and successes with surprising insight, making this a funk-drenched hip-hop confessional well worth the hype. --Amy Linden EMINEM THE EMINEM SHOW
