He's been on the cover of practically every music magazine since his debut album dropped in 1999. Now, 10 years after The Slim Shady LP, Eminem marks his 10th anniversary as a Hip Hop hurricane with Relapse, yet another skillful collaboration with Dr. Dre. Devil's Night

Devil's Night Review

Devil's Night Feature

  • D 12 DEVIL`S NIGHT
Eminem: love him or hate him? It's no surprise that Slim Shady evokes such conflicted feelings--he's easy to champion and disparage alike, and this new D12 album doesn't make the decision any easier. Though hip-hop's pale wonder is now joined by his five, conspicuously black Detroit peers, this still sounds and feels like a Marshall Mathers project. The biting disses of MTV pop figures ("Ain't Nuttin' But Music")--still there. The dark journeys into faux psychosis ("American Psycho," "Devils Night")--still there. The big middle finger at conservatives, conformists, and critics ("That's How," "Purple Pills," "S*** Can Happen")--still there. And throw in Dr. Dre's production alongside Denaun Porter's lumbering funk tracks and Em's own beats, and this is basically the third Eminem album. Besides, he's still the most interesting of the six D12 members to listen to--slicker lyrics, better flow, and just a more engaging personality. Which, of course, is telling the listener to go to hell. Bottom line: If you liked the last two Eminem albums, this one won't disappoint. And if you hated the last two, at least you have the other D12 members to distract your attention. --Oliver Wang This format comes with a bonus disc including the single 'Shit On You' (album version), two bonus tracks, the explicit version of the 'Shit On You' video, a screen saver, web links, E-cards and a photo gallery.

The Marshall Mathers LP

The Marshall Mathers LP Review

The Marshall Mathers LP Feature

  • EMINEM THE MARSHALL MATHERS
Will the real Slim Shady please stand up? On Eminem's sophomore album, he can't decide who he wants to be: the deranged pseudo-psycho of the Slim Shady LP, or a nice guy who just likes to rhyme about slicing and dicing his girlfriend ("Kim"). Of course, according to Eminem, he's just kidding. He refuses to take responsibility for the misogynistic, homophobic bile he spews, whining that he's the victim of people who don't get his unique sense of humor. It's good old America's fault if the kids aren't alright (Eminem blames bad parenting), and he's just capitalizing on Uncle Sam's dark side. On the Marshall Mathers LP, he's ambivalent about his fame, angry at his life, pissed off that people take him seriously, and fightin' mad at boy bands--and a lot of other white people. But the blue-eyed brat is acutely aware of his status as rap's resident alien: he has the most offensive mouth running, but never uses the "N" word. He gives lyrical love to tragic (black) legends like Tupac and Biggie while dissing white rappers hard. Even sitting duck Puffy gets the kid-gloves treatment. Of course, Eminem is an interesting, witty rapper, and there's some nice production on this CD, courtesy of Dr. Dre and others. But the hatred in Eminem's rhymes makes the album rotten at its core. And his protests that Slim Shady is just a persona become less convincing with each arrest. Then again, Eminem's got it hard: he's rich, famous, white, and male. --Lizz Mendez Berry UK version of the controversial rapper's sophomore album, one of the fastest-selling rap albums of all time. Includes one bonus track, 'The Kids'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

Encore (Deluxe Edition)

Encore (Deluxe Edition) Review

Encore (Deluxe Edition) Feature

  • TESTED
Eminem's fourth album offers few surprises, but still enough pleasures to carry the day. As evinced by Em's pre-election, pro-voting "Mosh," this is not exactly the same Eminem who seemingly crapped on anything and everything. Encore finds a surprisingly mature Eminem waxing reflective about his battle with Benzino ("Like Toy Soldiers") rather than unloading both barrels. However, it's not all elder statesmanship: "Puke" goes after his ex-wife Kim with incredible scorn, and "Big Weenie" showcases the familiar juvenile humor that made him famous. If Encore has a clear weakness, it's the bland production--the same plodding sound that he and Dr. Dre cooked up on the previous three albums. The exotic flavor of "Ass Like That" catches the ear, but many others run off the same monotonous minor-key melodies and tempos. Of course, people buy Eminem albums to hear him spit first and foremost, and in that regard few fans will be disappointed by Encore; it'd just be nice to see him switch up his sound at some point. --Oliver Wang "ENCORE" is multi-platinum recording artist EMINEM's first full album of new material since 2002's "THE EMINEM SHOW," which spawned the hit singles "Without Me" and "Cleanin' Out My Closet." That album went on the sell over 19 million albums worldwide. He followed up in November 2002 with Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture ‘8 Mile’, which featured the Academy Award winning song "Lose Yourself" and sold almost 9 million copies worldwide. Earlier this year, Eminem’s group D-12 released D-12 World (global sales over 3 million) and scored hits with "My Band" and "How Come".

ENCORE, Executive Produced by DR. DRE, features guest performances by 50 CENT, D-12, NATE DOGG, OBIE TRICE, and STAT QUO.

BONUS DISC: This two disc set includes a bonus CD with three previously unreleased EMINEM songs.

Buck The World

Buck The World Review

Put Young Buck and his mentor 50 Cent together and you get a whole lot more than the artistic equivalent of an item and a half off the dollar menu. The two of them proved it on 2004's Straight Outta Ca$hville, and it holds for Buck the World, a disc that clamps itself to the G-Unit sound even while playing yo-yo with it. "Hold On," Fitty's sole contribution here, pops with the same menacing energy that informed Ca$hville, but elsewhere Buck defects from the unit (where are four-star gangstas Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo?) in favor of mostly successful team-ups with Snoop, TI, 8Ball, Lyfe Jennings and, kind of surprisingly, Ky-Mani Marley. (And that's just naming a few--clearly, Buck's phone calls are getting returned these days.) The extra-unit collaborations sound like natural enough dabblings for the sake of musical growth, especially the sizzling soul glance-back "Haters," featuring Kokane. But even though he's eased up on the G-pedal, 50's guiding principles poke up throughout: besides their hot beats, what binds these songs is authenticity. Buck may have temporarily lost sight of the corner, but he knows how to keep it real. -Tammy La Gorce
